When it comes to setting the foundation for your behavioral training the best place to start is with house training. It is an extremely important phase in your pet’s life and can help lay the foundation for a strong bond and lifelong relationship.
When it comes to house training your faithful canine or feline companion experts advise that the earlier you began the better. It’s important to begin this training while your pet is still young and in the developmental stages.
Simple guideline for house training your pet
Here are some simple guidelines you should follow:
- Give your pet their own space
In the beginning, supervision and consistency is key. Untrained puppies, dogs cats or kitties should not be allowed to roam around the house without supervision. When you are at home keep them close to you or in a place where you can see them clearly.
When you go out, even for a short time confine them in either a crate or specific area of your home where they will be safe and can do little damage. Often the kitchen, a laundry room or bathroom will work well.
When it comes to sleeping arrangements pick a specific place in your home where they will sleep every night. Be sure to provide them with a [bed or blanket] of some kind. Remember consistency is key. It’s important that they know exactly where their space is because it will provide them a sense of security and well-being.
- Introduce them to new places gradually
After you have taught them where their own space is and how to behave and it, it’s time to start introducing them to the other areas of your home. Be sure to spend time with them in each new area. For instance, If you want to show them the new place where they can eat, do it under your supervision.
Along with introducing to the new places it’s important to emphasize exactly what they are allowed and not allowed to do in these areas. You can do this by [leashing them] so that you can effectively control their reactions. Unleash them when you think they have become familiar with the new area. Just, remember supervision is key so keep a watchful eye on them at first to keep them from getting into trouble.
- Focus on potty train them properly
When it comes to properly potty training your pooch it’s important to show them the area where they can do their business. Make sure not to confuse them. Never allow them to play in that area or they will get the idea that they can use the same place for all their activities, which will slow down the training process.
- Help them understand the “No Chew” command.
By nature, dogs like to chew on things. This is because it helps strengthen their teeth and gums. While it is a healthy exercise for their jaws they can be extremely damaging to your personal belongings. Part of your [pet house training] is providing them with toys that they are allowed to chew on and helping them understand that not all things can be used as a [chew toy.]
When it comes to [correcting bad behavior] like chewing on your favorite table lay it important to be stern as you give them the “no chew” command and praise them when they do the right thing and be sure to give them a reward.
- Set off-limits areas.
Along with introducing them to the various areas in your home, it is just as important to set off-limit areas. This includes rooms, certain pieces of furniture and electric cables and cords. Whenever they go near anything that is off limits give them a stern “off” command. When they heard your command quickly be sure to pat and praise them immediately.
Remember good house training is the foundation for all behavioral techniques, so taking the time to properly teach your faithful canine and pet companion how to behave properly in your home can be the key to your success.
